From 1957 to 1993, he served the Grady College as Director of Undergraduate Services and Honors Advisor. He assisted in the creation of the honors program and the Public Relations Student Society of America at the University of Georgia. Mr. Abney  was a member of many organizations of advertising and public relations groups, and was active in the Retired Officers' Association after his service in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.
