A Place of Our Own [Promo Reel]
Summary: "For consideration by the George Foster Peabody Awards, KCET/Los Angeles, hereby submits a unique Public Service project, the KCed Initiative combining daily television programs in English and in Spanish, educational web sites in each language, and more than 200 bi-lingual outreach workshops, all designed to help solve one of California's most pressing problems: each year hundreds of thousands of children enter kindergarten inadequately prepared to succeed.

"The project was born out of a 2003 conference of educators and activists who recommended an undertaking specifically providing parents and home childcare providers the know-how to help their young charges develop the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they'll need when they enter formal learning. Early research with childcare providers helped select a format (talk show/demonstration) and made crystal clear that the programs must be produced in Spanish as well as English to truly serve the target audience.

"120 programs were produced in each language, A Place of Our Own in English and Los Ninos en Su Casa in Spanish, and are broadcast daily on California's public television stations, scheduled among popular PBS children's programs. Nielsen research indicates they are reaching their target audience. (See attachment)

"Impact research conducted by Hypothesis Company confirms that the series are making a difference. Over 80% of tested caregivers reported increased knowledge as a result of viewing the programs. Most significantly, the series led to significant positive changes in actual caregiver behavior. 'It taught me that you don't hit the child when they hit another child. You take them and explain how to share and play.' (See attachment)

"The series are supported by two deep comprehensive web sites - aplaceofourown.org and losninosensucasa.org - that provide materials, background and resources to reinforce and extend the educational content. In one year these websites have received more than 1.5 million page views from web users statewide, nationally, and even internationally. (See attachment)

"Outreach workshops provide a hands-on opportunity for caregivers to gain additional training and exchange tips and ideas. In the first year, KCET conducted over 200 workshops statewide, reaching caregivers of an estimated 9,500 children under the age of five. (See attached materials)

"The Los Ni'os en Su Casa and A Place of Our Own initiative has provided a unique public service to parents and child care providers of young children throughout California. Its success is reflected in this comment from Evelyn V. Martinez, executive director of First 5 LA, one of the funding partners of the series: 'The outstanding public response to A Place of Our Own' and Los Ni'os speaks to the great need for not only this type of television programming, but also the desire of parents and caregivers themselves for more resources that will enable them to give our children the best start in life."--2005 Peabody Awards entry form.
