This Week (Television program : ABC). [2000-03-26], In the Holy Land
Summary: "In March, 'This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts' traveled to Jerusalem to document the historic mission of Pope John Paul II. The Pope described his trip as a spiritual journey, following the footsteps of Jesus. But even though the Pontiff's journey was ostensibly about peace, no trip to this region is without political overtones.

"This Week' managed to do the 'almost impossible' -- gather the major players in the Middle East crisis and allow them to listen to one another. P.L.O. leader Yasser Arafat has rarely agreed to be interviewed on the same show as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, but both leaders appeared on 'This Week.' George Stephanopoulos interviewed King Abdullah of Jordan who had granted very few interviews since the death of his father. His country, however, continues to play a major role in ensuring stability in the region.

"Using the incredible pictures that were coming out of the Middle East that morning, 'This Week' managed to intertwine hard-hitting interviews with the unique video of the papal visit. In one hour, 'This Week' brought together a historic show at a historic moment when the Pope visited the Holy Land."--2000 Peabody Awards entry form.
