A Huey P. Newton Story
Summary: "A Huey P. Newton Story, which has received immense critical acclaim since it premiered on BLACK STARZ! stars film and stage actor Roger Guenveur Smith and is directed by Spike Lee. Shot before a live audience, the intimate portrait about the late co-founder of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, was adapted for film by Smith from his Obie(R) Award winning off-Broadway solo performance by the same name. A Huey P. Newton Story was produced in association with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and African Heritage Network (AHN). Additional funding was provided by the National Black Programming Consortium and KQED, San Francisco. Steve Adams, Bob L. Johnson and Marc Henry Johnson of Luna Ray Films are producers.

Newton Story, the first original production from Starz Encore Group's BLACK STARZ!, has been selected for three international film festivals in Italy, England and British Columbia- the Venice International Film Festival in Venice, Italy; the BFM International Film Festival in London, England; and the Vancouver International Film Festival in British Columbia.

"In the United States the film was selected to spotlight the 2001 Prized Pieces International Black Film and Video Festival in Pittsburgh, PA and FilmFest Kansas City in Kansas City. A Huey P.
