War Stories
Summary: "War Stories is an educational online exhibit designed to help the public better understand the challenges war correspondents face. It is a part of newseum.org's ongoing efforts to explore the role of a free press in a democratic society. The exhibit contains three components: ten hours of video interviews with current and former war correspondents, a chronology of war reporting from the Civil War to Kosovo, and an essay by Harold Evans. To our knowledge it is the most comprehensive web exhibit ever done on this subject, and it provides compelling first hand accounts of the most important stories of the 20th century. The exhibit has received 15 million hits since it went online.
"While many of the interview subjects are [well-known], Walter Cronkite, Ted Kopple, Ed Bradley, others are more obscure. This project insures that their remarkable stories are not lost. The Media and Technology component traces the evolution of modern war reporting, and examines the influence technology had on it. The complete unedited video interviews are available to scholars and students on request, and we hope to eventually publish the complete transcripts on the site."--2001 Peabody Awards entry form.
