Circus. [No. 5], Born to be Circus
Summary: "Some are born to it...Others run to it

"In a country that offers a dizzying array of amusements and entertainments, there is none quite so enduring or so universal as the circus. An afternoon under the big top -- peanut shells underfoot, the swirling color and motion of human feats both extraordinary and ridiculous -- is practically an American rite of passage; and it has been for generations. Born out of an idea of theater as a cathartic, communal event, one that bound people together and allowed them to both express their hopes and purge their fears, the circus has always revealed, every bit as much as it has entertained. It has shaped our history, and our language, and, perhaps most importantly, the stories we tell to and about ourselves. Indeed, it is one of our nation's most potent collective fantasies: to run away and join the circus. Of course, in reality, few of us ever do.

"Now, over the course of six dramatic and mesmerizing hours, Show of Force, the creative visionaries behind the groundbreaking PBS series CARRIER, will take us away to the circus -- not just under the big top, where we can all pay to go if the inclination strikes, but far beyond it: into what circus folk call 'the backyard,' the place where the trailers are parked and the real heart of the circus beats. With unprecedented access granted by the Big Apple Circus, the filmmaking team followed this traveling company over the course of an entire season. CIRCUS immerses viewers in human drama that is at once wholly unfamiliar and also distinctively American. In the process, the series explores one of the few cultural forms that unites our otherwise polyglot and disparate nation, and illuminates the ways in which the circus -- even now, in the age of 'virtual' entertainment -- speaks to the core experiences and values that define us as a people."--2010 Peabody Awards entry form.
