Scope and Content Note: BFA was awarded a Peabody Award, administered by the Grady College of Journalism at UGA, for Promotion of International Understanding Through Radio in 1972. The citation reads: “From 40 countries, a unique variety of informational, public affairs and cultural audio-tape programs are released daily to commercial and educational stations. These cover such events as the great European music festivals and developments in the fields of science, education, and the lively arts. A BBC Public Affairs Program This Week in Latin America Vienna Festival of 1973 World Press Digest Yugoslav Press Review Each program runs approximately 5 minutes to 60 minutes in length and is either complete on one tape or complete on two tapes.
Biographical Note: The Broadcasting Foundation of America (BFA) was founded in the 1950s by a group of broadcasters to distribute foreign news content to U.S. public broadcasting radio stations. BFA was in operation from c. 1955-c. 1983.
Extent: 6,629 1/4” audiotape reels The collection also has labels for an additional 26 audiotape reels that were not found with the rest of the collection. Information about the contents of these tapes is available in the collections folder in Brown Media Archives.
Provenance: This collection was purchased in 1978 by the University of Georgia Libraries which also subscribed to receive more BFA programs until it cancelled the subscription in 1979.
