Collection Dates: after 1940
Scope and Content Note: The Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia Libraries holds over 90,000 titles, with radio programs dating from 1940 and television from 1948. It reflects the best in American broadcasting history, with titles from news, documentary, entertainment, educational, children's, and public service programming. There are radio transcription discs, audiotape, audiocassettes, 16mm kinescopes and prints, 2" videoreels, and videocassettes. Many of these are the only surviving copies of the work. These are all original archival materials. Reference, or "user" copies, are available for much of the collection for use in the University of Georgia Libraries Media Department.
Biographical Note: "Broadcasting's most prestigious award, the George Foster Peabody Award, is given annually by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia (UGA). Several awards are given for "distinguished achievement and meritorious service" by individuals, networks, stations, and organizations. Each winner receives a bronze medallion bearing the likeness of philanthropist and financier George Foster Peabody, a native of Columbus."--"George Foster Peabody Awards" from the New Georgia Encyclopedia, http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2646&sug=y (Viewed February 24, 2010)
